With its pristine beaches and beautiful sunsets, there’s no denying Naples’ appeal.
And it’s no wonder the Naples area was named one of the happiest places in the country by National Geographic, Gallup and National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner on Wednesday.
The Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island metropolitan area took the 11th spot on a list of 25 happiest U.S. cities based on the National Geographic/Blue Zones Index. The index was developed to measure a population’s happiness based on 15 metrics, including civic engagement, walkability and healthful food options.
Boulder, Colorado, tops the list. The Santa-Cruz-Watsonville, California, metro area made the second spot, and Charlottesville, Virginia, was No. 3.

Naples is the 20th fastest growing city in America.
That’s according to financial news and opinion website 24/7 Wall St.
The metro area’s population rose by 10.7 percent during the past five years.
The website attributes the area’s unusually high growth rate to “its status as a retirement destination,” and the migration of baby boomers to warmer climates.
Nearly 30 percent of the area’s population is at least 65 years old, more than double the national population.
“Normally you would say that migration is a young person’s game, but some of these Florida areas may be attracting some baby boomers as well,” said William Frey, a senior demographer with the Brookings Institution, a public policy think tank.
Not every city on the top 20 list is a retirement destination.

Naples has kept its title as a “best-performing city.”
The Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island metro area — or Collier County — ranks 18th this year on The Milken Institute’s index of “Best-Performing Cities” in the nation. It dropped one notch from last year.
Jace Kentner, Collier County’s economic development director, said he was bummed the area fell a spot but happy to see it holding its own in the Top 20.
The index is an assessment of how areas are doing in creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. To come up with the rankings, researchers with Milken, a nonprofit think tank, analyzed data in more than 400 metro areas, including growth in jobs, wages and technology output.
“It’s considered a venerable source of information. Companies like to see that; companies that are searching for places to go, they like that. It adds credibility to what we are doing,” Kentner said.

Collier County is the second-healthiest county in Florida for the fifth year in a row, according to new rankings released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The healthiest among Florida’s 67 counties is St. John’s County — home to the city of St. Augustine. St. John’s has held the title of the healthiest county since 2014.
Lee County came in 11th healthiest, a move up from 12th place last year and a steady improvement from coming in 20th place in 2015.
This is the ninth year that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has conducted annual county health rankings across the United States, where communities view their standing as a badge of honor or a call to action. The foundation conducts the annual assessment with the University of Wisconsin Public Health Institute.
